Canada, France, UK launch research workshops exploring societal implications of Artificial Intelligence

CIFAR, in partnership with the the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) and UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), has launched a series of international AI & Society research workshops to examine the economic, ethical, policy and legal implications of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on society.

As AI technologies become more integrated into daily life through digital assistants and self-driving vehicles, their responsible and ethical development is a pressing concern. The new workshops, set to take place from June 2019 to June 2020 across CanadaFrance and the UK, will build on international collaborations and bring together perspectives from the social sciences, humanities, law, engineering and computer science as well as policy, business and civil society. The interdisciplinary groups will explore how AI will impact different populations and sectors.

Administered and managed by CIFAR with support from CNRS and UKRI, the workshops explore the global implications of AI on a range of topics – from future conflicts in the Arctic and societal trust in AI systems to how AI may impact the practice of medicine. Each workshop will also produce a non-technical publication with insights for policy-makers in the public and private sectors as well as the public. The eight workshops were carefully selected after a three-month adjudication process. Each workshop will receive up to CAD$50,000 for a total combined commitment of CAD$400,000 from all three organizations for this joint call.

This new initiative is the second stream of workshops realized through CIFAR’s AI & Society program, which was launched in 2017. The AI & Society program is a key pillar of the CIFAR Pan-Canadian AI Strategy, a $125 millioninvestment from the Government of Canada with the goal of supporting Canada’s leadership in machine learning research and training.

LSU CS Professor Studies COVID-19 Disparities on Social Media

BATON ROUGE, La., July 01, 2020 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — During the COVID-19 pandemic, a plethora of information has gone out from various news sources about how the virus is being tracked, how it is spread, how many cases exist, and so forth. The problem is much of this vital information can be inaccurate, leaving people to ignore advice from public officials. For this reason, LSU Computer Science and Engineering Assistant Professor Kisung Lee and LSU Environmental Sciences Professor Nina Lam are evaluating how a population reacts to multiple sources of information, hoping to eliminate disparities in the messaging.“Studying different COVID-19 responses to trustworthy information will contribute new perspectives and improve our fundamental understanding of the human aspects of information trustworthiness during a pandemic,” Lee said.Lee, principal investigator on the project, and Lam recently received a $200,000 grant from the National Science Foundation for the project and will have University of Washington Center for Studies in Demography & Ecology Director Sara Curran and Cybersecurity Research Fellow Jessica Beyer work alongside them.Lee will collect and analyze Twitter and linked media data using artificial intelligence-based techniques; Lam will map the data into administrative regions and analyze the data geographically (state- and county-level comparisons); and Curran and Beyer will collect policy and media source trustworthiness data and analyze it with other contextual information, such as media framing. Data will be collected and analyzed in Louisiana and Washington.They will collect three waves of Twitter and associated data to compare sentiment and language use patterns among users and analyze how these characteristics evolve through the recognition of the emergency, the peak of the crisis, and the mitigation of the pandemic in the U.S. The tweets and entities will be classified for relevance (individual, organization, or bot) with derived age and location.
