Geneva – June 28, 2023 – WISeKey International Holding Ltd. WISeKey is developing a new range of Trust Services, that will take advantage of the latest developments in Post-Quantum Encryption (PQE) which can be applied in real-world applications of digital signatures and encryptions using PKI and digital certificates, such as secure communication channels (TLS), enhanced Key Exchanges and email security (S/MIME). These services are currently based on standards that can be improved to be resilient to quantum attacks and offer backwards compatibility with existing counterparts. The implementation of PQE by WISeKey is done around the concept of “hybrid signatures” which combine in a single X.509 certificate a conventional signature with a second signature using a PQE algorithm. This approach ensures backwards compatibility and opens a new horizon of cybersecurity services.

In a post-quantum world, this technology is crucial as it protects the privacy of data even from quantum computers, which are theoretically capable of breaking many conventional encryption methods. As we see an increasing number of devices being connected to the IoT, the security risks are also amplified. SEALSQ’s post-quantum technology, hence, becomes a vital tool in maintaining the privacy and integrity of data in IoT networks.

The integration of SEALSQ with GPT capabilities can take several forms, especially for IoT:

  1. Secure Data Processing: ChatGPT can analyze and respond to encrypted data using homomorphic encryption. This allows the model to provide insights and responses while maintaining data privacy, critical in a quantum world where traditional encryption methods might not be sufficient.
  2. Enhanced Privacy for User Interactions: IoT devices often require user interactions and responses, and integrating ChatGPT with SEALSQ can allow these interactions to be securely encrypted. This means that even if the interaction data is intercepted, it remains encrypted and secure.
  3. Secure Updates: IoT devices often require updates for their software, firmware, and AI models. By using ChatGPT with SEALSQ, these updates can be encrypted in a way that is resistant to quantum computing attacks.
  4. Confidential Machine Learning: If the machine learning model itself is integrated with SEALSQ, it can offer a new level of privacy-preserving machine learning. Model training can be done on encrypted data, and the model itself can remain confidential.
  5. Encrypted Command and Control: In an IoT context, ChatGPT could be used to interpret and respond to encrypted commands. This could allow a user to securely control IoT devices using natural language, with all communications being securely encrypted.
  6. Secure Data Sharing: IoT devices often share data with each other and with cloud-based systems. This data can be encrypted using SEAL, and then processed or analyzed by GPT, without ever having to be decrypted.

French AI company achieves key EU regulatory compliance for multiple algorithms that identify, detect, and quantify severe conditions from medical images. 
LA CIOTAT, France, July 3, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — Avicenna.AI, a leading medical imaging AI company, has received Medical Device Regulation (MDR) certificate for five of its algorithms from certification body BSI Medical Devices. This development means the company’s product portfolio is fully compliant with the European Union’s MDR 2017/745, which is now mandatory for medical device companies that want to provide their solutions in Europe.

The MDR was introduced to update the EU’s regulations for medical devices, addressing safety issues and the recent emergence of AI tools and software as a medical device (SaMD), which did not exist when the old regulations were created. Ensuring MDR compliance is a critical component of obtaining and maintaining CE-mark status, which allows a device to be freely traded in the EU.
Compared to the previous Medical Device Directive (MDD), the MDR has a wider scope and more stringent requirements. It emphasizes clinical evaluation, post-market surveillance, device traceability, rigorous technical documentation, and risk management. These measures aim to enhance patient safety and ensure high standards for medical devices, including AI and software-based solutions.

At the other end of the spectrum, complex, multi-application edge devices with embedded operating systems want to protect machine learning algorithms in secure execution environments.  According to Menting, “It is the latter market that will drive the highest revenues. Better virtualization technologies in smaller form factors are enabling parallel secure containerization and enclaves for confidential processing in embedded systems; these capabilities are in high demand for flexible but secure device management.”
From secure integrated circuits to TEE-based microcontrollers, the embedded security market is vibrant and competitive, host to dozens of semiconductors and silicon IP providers. Dominant proprietary solutions are increasingly being challenged by open-source alternatives and technologies that don’t necessarily align with established standards. This fragmentation can sometimes be problematic in terms of security cohesion and interoperability, but it also points to a gap in the market that clearly cannot be fulfilled by the incumbents alone.
“With the growing threat landscape, notably in the IoT space, and increasing policy and regulation pushing for more supply chains and end devices, the outlook for the secure embedded hardware market is highly opportunistic,” Menting concludes.
