8% of EU enterprises used AI technologies in 2023

In 2023, 8% of enterprises in the EU with 10 or more employees utilized artificial intelligence (AI) technologies in their operations.

Artificial intelligence encompasses systems that employ technologies such as text mining, computer vision, speech recognition, natural language generation, machine learning, and deep learning. These systems gather and analyze data to predict, recommend, or decide the best course of action to achieve specific goals, with varying levels of autonomy.
The highest percentages of enterprises with 10 or more employees using AI technologies were found in Denmark (15.2%), Finland (15.1%), and Luxembourg (14.4%). Conversely, the lowest percentages were observed in Romania (1.5%), Bulgaria (3.6%), and both Poland and Hungary (3.7%).
Regarding the types of AI technologies used by these enterprises in 2023, automating workflows or assisting in decision-making (AI-based software robotic process automation) was the most prevalent, with 3% of enterprises employing it. This was followed by text mining (2.9%) and machine learning, including deep learning (2.6%).
Other AI technologies in use included speech recognition (2.5%), image recognition and processing (2.2%), natural language generation (2.1%), and enabling the physical movement of machines through autonomous decisions based on environmental observation, such as in autonomous robots, self-driving vehicles, and autonomous drones (0.9%).
