Audi is integrating the AI-driven chatbot ChatGPT into its infotainment systems via Microsoft Azure OpenAI Service to enhance the voice control capabilities of its vehicles.
Starting from July this year, approximately two million Audi models manufactured since 2021 and equipped with the third-generation modular infotainment system (MIB 3) will feature ChatGPT. This integration allows drivers to interact with their vehicles using natural language, enabling them to obtain information while driving. Future models, including the Q6 e-tron and upcoming vehicles with the E3 1.2 electronics architecture, will also incorporate ChatGPT through Cerence Chat Pro as an extension of the Audi assistant.
The introduction of ChatGPT into the voice input system of MIB 3-equipped models, beginning with the 2021 Audi A3 and expanding to other models, revolutionizes voice control capabilities beyond previous limitations. Audi drivers can now seamlessly operate infotainment, navigation, air conditioning systems, and seek general knowledge information hands-free, enhancing safety by minimizing distractions.
ChatGPT, powered by Azure OpenAI Service, forms the foundation of this new feature, integrated into Audi’s systems through Cerence Inc.’s automotive-grade Chat Pro solution.
Enhancing the Audi assistant
Audi has also augmented its existing self-learning voice assistant, the Audi assistant, in vehicles featuring the new E3 1.2 electronics architecture, debuting in the Audi Q6 e-tron. Passengers can activate the assistant with familiar commands like “Hey Audi” or via the steering wheel’s push-to-talk button to ask questions. The Audi assistant autonomously determines whether to execute vehicle functions, locate destinations, or provide weather updates. When faced with general knowledge queries, the system seamlessly redirects them to ChatGPT, ensuring a cohesive user experience.
Maintaining privacy and security
Ensuring utmost privacy, all interactions with ChatGPT, including questions and answers, are deleted post-processing, with ChatGPT never accessing vehicle data.
Future potential and applications
Future enhancements will enable querying vehicle-specific information such as tire pressure, facilitated by large language models like those developed by Cerence.
AI-driven advancements at Audi
Audi leverages AI across its operations to enhance customer experiences, optimize business processes, and innovate in areas like design, HR knowledge transfer, and production quality control. Audi adheres to responsible AI practices aligned with EU regulations (Data Act and AI Act), ethics, and employee training for future AI implementations.
Marcus Keith, Vice President of Interior, Infotainment, and Connectivity Development at Audi, commented on the integration, stating, “With ChatGPT seamlessly integrated into our voice control, we combine the strengths of both applications. Our customers will benefit from enhanced, secure access to AI-driven knowledge, furthering Audi’s commitment to delivering a best-in-class in-cabin experience.”
This integration underscores Audi’s commitment to leveraging AI to redefine automotive technology, enhancing both functionality and safety for drivers and passengers alike.
